City Living Resident Spotlight—Kim and Tom

City Living, Neometro

“Kim and Tom are architects and designers, who live and work together. They are creative and their home in Fitzroy reflects that: it’s full, colourful and stylish. But Kim’s not joking when she says the apartment is a wardrobe.

The second you walk in there are sneakers and shoes lined up in makeshift timber and Besser brick shelves. But discerning eyes will recognise that this is no ordinary footwear, but shoes that people wait in line for. The sneakers Tom is sporting today are another example: a collaboration between Japanese designer Sacai and Nike.”

"A pram at the front door points to a new priority for the couple. They have welcomed a baby, Tai, and Tom, an enthusiastic new dad, has already organised a fatherly Danish cargo bike with a kid’s seat. It will join the bikes on the balcony and the cycle trainer in the living room corner. The trainer kept the demons away during lockdown; now it keeps a potential new-dad-fitness-slump at bay. Tom can’t wait to hit the road with Tai up front and the wind in their hair.

Nine Smith Street was completed in 2016 and is located just a few hundred metres from Neometro’s first-ever project, a warehouse conversion in Little Smith Street finished back in 1985. A mixed-use development comprised of two buildings with frontages respectively on Little Smith Street and Smith proper, the complex boasts a six-metre wide north-south courtyard, which allows light, breeze and landscape views to every apartment.”

Since 1985, Neometro has been building design-focused homes that enhance everyday urban living. In the new book City Living, the long-standing residents of some of these buildings open their doors to readers, to share their stories of life in high density. Featuring richly detailed photography of each resident’s home, City Living gives readers an intimate insight into a mode of dwelling that, handled thoughtfully, is fast becoming the preference of many in Australia.
