This large format volume consists of 42 sets of paired photographs captured in Kyoto in 2011, juxtaposing the 17th-century imperial villa Katsura Rikyū with a makeshift shelter under a nearby bridge.

Few examples of Imperial Japanese architecture are as revered as Prince Hachijō Toshihito’s Katsura Rikyū. ‘Rediscovered’ by the German architect Bruno Taut in his exploration of Japanese architecture from 1933-36, it featured prominently in his subsequent publication, Houses and People of Japan. This was followed some years later by the seminal publication Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture by architects Kenzō Tange and Walter Gropius with photographs by Ishimoto Yasuhiro. Over the decades that followed this publication's release, Katsura Rikyū has become a focal point in the dialogue between East and West and between tradition and modernity.

In considering the relationship between Japanese architecture and Buddhism, Gropius writes of zazen – translated as seated meditation and the suspension of all judgment – and koan – a story or paradox designed to short-cut reason and the intellect, leading to direct realisation of a reality beyond thought. These ideas have informed the work presented here.

Statement by Brett Boardman:
Photography has long been compelled by the fleeting nature of things. The images within this volume are the output of a spontaneous response to direct experience. The initial intent was to document the architectural, spatial and material qualities of Katsura Rikyū, however on leaving the palace I discovered a nearby second site, a makeshift shelter that seemed to more directly express Prince Hachijō Toshihito’s desire for the original Katsura to be ‘a teahouse in the melon patch’.
The images were created within two hours of each other. enormous challenges for the country at the interface between globalisation and cultural identity.

Some 10.5 million inhabitants live in the centre of the capital Seoul, while the metropolitan area includes around 25 million residents making it the second largest conurbation in the world after Tokyo.

The result is high urban density, which The theme of Building with Water is the use of water in architecture. It presents buildings that explicitly refer to water in their design and form. It establishes a typology of building by the water: residential buildings, transportation and industrial buildings, buildings for culture and leisure.

Classic examples of building by, in, or on the water serve as introductions: for example, the Chateau de Chenonceaux on the Loire, Falling Water in Pennsylvania by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, by Louis I. Kahn. Organized according to their locations by a river, lake, or the sea, some twenty international projects are presented. The author's concern is not showing luxurious buildings in privileged locations but rather presenting projects that seriously grapple with the main criterion of the location – namely, water – in an ecologically sustainable way and respond to it with their design.

Publisher: Birkhauser,
ISBN: 9783035611441, Author: Friederike Schneider, Oliver Heckmann, Format: Softcover, 330 x 245 mm, 336pp

This housing construction design manual documents and analyses some 130 international residential structures from the last fifty years.

From the standardised floor plans of the 1960s to the more individual concepts of the 1980s and the changed requirements and housing types of recent years, example structures by famous and lesser-known architects from throughout the world showcase the tremendous variety of possible designs.

The categorisation of projects from a town planning perspective is supplemented by the detailed typological description of the relevant housing types.

Every project is presented with its typical floor plans to a scale of 1:200; sections, site plans, and photographs illuminate each buildings structure and situation.

This introductory theoretical and historical essays have been newly written or updated, and offer a structured overview of the residential housing typology and its development.

Publisher: Birkhauser Architecture, ISBN: 9783764387693, Author: Felipe Hernandez, Format: Hardcover, 240 x 285 mm, 152pp

Latin Americia has been an important place for architecture for many decades. Not merely an accommodation between two different disciplines, it moves fluidly between the hierarchical structures of both built and visual environments.

Having studied architecture at Universidad Central de Venezuela, Kairuz worked for a time as an architect on a rehabilitation project in one of the most violent slums in the southern hemisphere: Barrio San Miguel de La Vega. That experience, along with wider observations of crisis, conflict and dislocation in Latin America and elsewhere, has informed Kairuz’s research and creative practice, exploring the disrupting effects of such conditions on architecture and the city. His work has been exhibited throughout Australia, Asia, Europe, the United States and South America, with this book specifically following in the wake of the exhibitions Dismantled at Centro Cultural Chacao (Caracas, 2014) and Variations at The Substation (Melbourne, 2012).

In this work, Kairuz reads the conventions of classical music (its strict discipline and the authority of the maestro) as analogous to wider systems of visual and spatial order. He then systematically dismantles these conventions, through the editing and recomposing of their elements, to the point of collapse. The work is driven by a fascination with ‘the mounting tensions that build up just before collapse, as well as the resilience that emerges right after the disaster erupts and falls into consciousness.’

The book is also a unique collaboration with the multi-award winning, multidisciplinary designer John Warwicker. Bringing both a lifetime of experience and a protean capacity to approach each new challenge afresh, Warwicker’s design typographically echoes the tension within Kairuz’s work, between control and dissonance, between discipline and restless enquiry.

Publisher: Birkhauser, ISBN: 9783034613262, Editor: Bert Bielefeld, Isabella Skiba, Format: Softcover, 155 x 220 mm, 76pp

Technical Drawing deals with the representation of plans throughout all phases of a project. There are, he says, ‘very few books on architecture that, I believe, concern the practice of architecture itself, as distinct from the large body of writing about the history, sociology and environmental science of architecture’. Van Schaik contends that we all share a common experience of space and light. Therefore, the architect’s skill in the crafting of space and light has the potential to intimately connect architecture with humanity. It challenges the normal understanding of modern architecture by proposing that the architecture of the early 20th century was shaped by the dominant medical obsession of its time: tuberculosis and its primary diagnostic tool, the X-ray.

If architectural discourse has from its beginning associated building and body, the body that it describes is the medical body, reconstructed by each new theory of health. Modern architects presented their architecture as a kind of medical instrument for protecting and enhancing the body. X-ray technology and modern architecture were born around the same time and evolved in parallel. While the X-ray exposed the inside of the body to the public eye, the modern building unveiled its interior, inverting the relationship between private and public.

Colomina suggests that if we want to talk about the state of the art in buildings, we should look to the dominant obsessions about illness and the latest techniques of imaging the body and ask what effects they may have on the way we conceive architecture.

About the author:

Beatriz Colomina is founding director of the program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University and Professor in the School of Architecture.
