This large format volume consists of 42 sets of paired photographs captured in Kyoto in 2011, juxtaposing the 17th-century imperial villa Katsura Rikyū with a makeshift shelter under a nearby bridge.

Few examples of Imperial Japanese architecture are as revered as Prince Hachijō Toshihito’s Katsura Rikyū. ‘Rediscovered’ by the German architect Bruno Taut in his exploration of Japanese architecture from 1933-36, it featured prominently in his subsequent publication, Houses and People of Japan. This was followed some years later by the seminal publication Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture by architects Kenzō Tange and Walter Gropius with photographs by Ishimoto Yasuhiro. Over the decades that followed this publication's release, Katsura Rikyū has become a focal point in the dialogue between East and West and between tradition and modernity.

In considering the relationship between Japanese architecture and Buddhism, Gropius writes of zazen – translated as seated meditation and the suspension of all judgment – and koan – a story or paradox designed to short-cut reason and the intellect, leading to direct realisation of a reality beyond thought. These ideas have informed the work presented here.

Statement by Brett Boardman:
Photography has long been compelled by the fleeting nature of things. The images within this volume are the output of a spontaneous response to direct experience. The initial intent was to document the architectural, spatial and material qualities of Katsura Rikyū, however on leaving the palace I discovered a nearby second site, a makeshift shelter that seemed to more directly express Prince Hachijō Toshihito’s desire for the original Katsura to be ‘a teahouse in the melon patch’.
The images were created within two hours of each other. Since the first edition was published in 2005, it has been adopted as a textbook at many universities. Organised into chapters on 'Raw Materials/Building Materials (Modules)', 'Elements (Building Components)', 'Structures (Building Methods)', and 'Buildings (Examples)', the book now includes a new section on 'Elevators' in the chapter 'Building Components' and on 'Shell construction – expansion – core and shell construction' in the chapter 'Structures'. The chapter on 'Buildings' now includes information about the typologies of 'courtyard house vs. veranda house'. In addition, the examples section has been expanded to cover three new projects whose design processes are documented comprehensively and systematically, step-by-step. Experience with the preceding edition has shown that the book has become an indispensable handbook for reference and reading not only for students and teachers but also for architects.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1116/0464/products/Constructing-Architecture-Materials-Processes-Structures-A-Handbook.jpg?v=1626764974
tom-kundig-works
Tom Kundig: Works

Publisher: Princeton Architectural Press,
ISBN: 9781616893453, Author: Tom Kundig, Format: Hardcover, 241 x 302 mm, 309pp

In Tom Kundig: Works, the celebrated Seattle-based architect presents eighteen new projects, from Hawaii to New York City. Zumthor's passion is the creation of buildings that produce this kind of effect, but how can one actually set out to achieve it.

In nine short, illustrated chapters framed as a process of self-observation, Zumthor describes what he has on his mind as he sets about creating the atmosphere of his houses. Images of spaces and buildings that affect him are every bit as important as particular pieces of music or books that inspire him. From the composition and presence of the materials to the handling of proportions and the effect of light, this poetics of architecture enables the reader to recapitulate what really matters in the process of house design.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CUW5T9hlFKc/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="13" style="background: #FFF; The theme of Building with Water is the use of water in architecture. It presents buildings that explicitly refer to water in their design and form. It establishes a typology of building by the water: residential buildings, transportation and industrial buildings, buildings for culture and leisure.

Classic examples of building by, in, or on the water serve as introductions: for example, the Chateau de Chenonceaux on the Loire, Falling Water in Pennsylvania by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, by Louis I. Kahn. Organized according to their locations by a river, lake, or the sea, some twenty international projects are presented. The author's concern is not showing luxurious buildings in privileged locations but rather presenting projects that seriously grapple with the main criterion of the location – namely, water – in an ecologically sustainable way and respond to it with their design.

Publisher: Birkhauser,
ISBN: 9783035611441, Author: Friederike Schneider, Oliver Heckmann, Format: Softcover, 330 x 245 mm, 336pp

This housing construction design manual documents and analyses some 130 international residential structures from the last fifty years.

From the standardised floor plans of the 1960s to the more individual concepts of the 1980s and the changed requirements and housing types of recent years, example structures by famous and lesser-known architects from throughout the world showcase the tremendous variety of possible designs.

The categorisation of projects from a town planning perspective is supplemented by the detailed typological description of the relevant housing types.

Every project is presented with its typical floor plans to a scale of 1:200; sections, site plans, and photographs illuminate each buildings structure and situation.

This introductory theoretical and historical essays have been newly written or updated, and offer a structured overview of the residential housing typology and its development.

Publisher: Birkhauser,
ISBN: 9783034600736, Author: Gunter Pfeifer, Per Brauneck, Format: Softcover, 280 x 230 mm, 120pp

To continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. Latent spatiality and geometric form become readily apparent to the observer, while the graphic anatomy of lines and data informatively depicts each architectural work.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/Chd1ig7vwWU/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style="background: #FFF; Built as a home for herself and her husband, it clearly demonstrates how architecture and design should keep a distance from individuals, society or community, and the natural environment – a stance that would come to underlie all of the Italian-born architect’s subsequent works. Photographed by master architectural photographer Yukio Futagawa, Casa de Vidro still appears as its designer intended, a prototype that responded to a new society, rising directly from the earth and embedded in the surrounding jungle.

Publisher: TOTO 2015 ISBN: 9784887062948 Format: hardcover, 248pp, 260x200mm

Glenn Murcutt works almost always alone, rarely makes models, and draws his works by hand. Not merely an accommodation between two different disciplines, it moves fluidly between the hierarchical structures of both built and visual environments.

Having studied architecture at Universidad Central de Venezuela, Kairuz worked for a time as an architect on a rehabilitation project in one of the most violent slums in the southern hemisphere: Barrio San Miguel de La Vega. That experience, along with wider observations of crisis, conflict and dislocation in Latin America and elsewhere, has informed Kairuz’s research and creative practice, exploring the disrupting effects of such conditions on architecture and the city. His work has been exhibited throughout Australia, Asia, Europe, the United States and South America, with this book specifically following in the wake of the exhibitions Dismantled at Centro Cultural Chacao (Caracas, 2014) and Variations at The Substation (Melbourne, 2012).

In this work, Kairuz reads the conventions of classical music (its strict discipline and the authority of the maestro) as analogous to wider systems of visual and spatial order. He then systematically dismantles these conventions, through the editing and recomposing of their elements, to the point of collapse. The work is driven by a fascination with ‘the mounting tensions that build up just before collapse, as well as the resilience that emerges right after the disaster erupts and falls into consciousness.’

The book is also a unique collaboration with the multi-award winning, multidisciplinary designer John Warwicker. Bringing both a lifetime of experience and a protean capacity to approach each new challenge afresh, Warwicker’s design typographically echoes the tension within Kairuz’s work, between control and dissonance, between discipline and restless enquiry.

Publisher: Birkhauser, ISBN: 9783038215974,
Author: Dietmar Offenhuber, Carlo Ratti, Format: Softcover, 165 x 241 mm, 192pp

The MIT based SENSEable City Lab under Carlo Ratti is one of the research centers that deal with the flow of people and goods, but also of refuse that moves around the world.
