Nestled at the base of a steeply terraced cemetery approximately forty kilometres north of Osaka, the Inagawa Cemetery Chapel is constructed of pink-tinted concrete and arranged around a central courtyard. Conceived as a contemporary place for prayer that responds with uncommon care to the Japanese cultural context of a denomination-neutral cemetery, the building seems to emerge from the land around it while simultaneously providing a distinct space of withdrawal. Suzuki's photographs — arranged by season — convey the experience of moving through the architecture as it changes with light, weather, and time. They are accompanied by an essay by Japanese author Toshiyuki Horie; a conversation between Suzuki, Thomas Struth, Chipperfield, and client Hideyuki Osawa on art, architecture, and cross-cultural collaboration; and a text by landscape architect Marcia Iwatate on the philosophy of the central wildflower garden. The book is bound with an exposed spine and printed on Takeo Satogami paper.
