Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was a giant of Italian modernism who defies easy categorisation. From 1923 to 1930 he served as artistic director of Richard Ginori, where he revitalised the company’s ceramic production. In 1928 he founded Domus, which became one of the world’s most influential design and architecture magazines and which he directed, apart from a break in the 1940s, for the rest of his life. In the postwar era, Ponti and his associates shaped the architectural image of Milan — with works including the Pirelli Tower — while also working globally, from Caracas and Tehran to Denver, Islamabad, and Eindhoven. About the Author
Manfredo di Robilant is Associate Professor of Architectural Design at the Polytechnic of Turin and a founding partner of DAR architettura. Manuel Orazi is an editor at the Italian publishing house Quodlibet and visiting professor at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
