About this book

Three buildings, three countries, one question: can architecture actually make a society more open, or does it only reflect the openness already there? Architecture of Coexistence tests that question against the White Mosque in Visoko, Bosnia-Herzegovina (1980), the Islamic Cemetery Altach in Austria (2012) and Superkilen park in Copenhagen (2011)—each a project where Muslim life in Europe has been given built form.

What distinguishes the book is that it does not stop at the architects. Scholars from anthropology, religious studies, heritage conservation and philosophy sit alongside interviews with the people who use these places, so the long social afterlife of each project becomes visible rather than assumed.

Key features

  • Three sustained case studies of contemporary architecture inhabited by Muslims in Europe
  • Interviews with both architects and users of each project
  • Photo essays by Velibor Božović, Cemal Emden, Jesper Lambaek and Nikolaus Walter
  • Around 100 illustrations, full colour

What you'll discover

  • How Zlatko Ugljen's White Mosque reworks the archetypal Bosnian plan under a deformed cupola
  • Bernardo Bader's Islamic Cemetery Altach, and Akšamija's own prayer-space installation within it
  • Superkilen as an experiment in extreme public participation across sixty nationalities
  • What migration, transculturalism and visibility mean once they are built rather than debated

About the editor

Azra Akšamija is an artist and architectural historian, founding director of the MIT Future Heritage Lab and Associate Professor in the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology.
