Curated by Aoki Jun under the 2025 Biennale’s overarching theme of Intelligens: Natural, Artificial, Collective, the Japan Pavilion imagined a near future in which AI technology has further advanced, and staged a conversation between the building’s constituent elements — the Hole, Wall Columns, Outer Walls, Brick Terrace, Pensilina, Tilted Loop Path, and Yew Tree — and the human beings who inhabit them, as equals. The premise draws on ma, the traditional Japanese concept of spatial-temporal in-betweenness, proposing that subjecthood exists not in the human or the world alone, but in the dialogue between them. This publication gathers behind-the-scenes reflections, critical essays by Mohsen Mostafavi and Miro Roman, speculative writings, and photography by Yurika Kono to expand on the themes of the exhibition.

About the Author
Aoki Jun graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1982 and founded Jun Aoki & Associates in 1991. His works include the Aomori Museum of Art, the Fukushima Lagoon Museum, and the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. He currently serves as Director of the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art and is Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts.
