This i the first book to tell of an exciting phase in the development of Australian architecture. The second half of the 20th century saw the acceptance and spread of the ideas and technologies of the Modern Movement and the later questioning of the results of those same forces. In Australia these world-wide developments have produced buildings of a distinct character arising from the unique circumstances of the continent and its people. Professor Taylor discusses the architecture in the context of the culture that brought it about and supports the text with photographs that reveal the particular qualities of the new buildings.
The main theme is the increasing appreciation and understanding of the country and the resulting growth in confidence and maturity in the architecture. About the Author
Dr Julie Willis is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Melbourne. She researches and publishes on the history of twentieth-century Australian architecture and is Editor of Fabrications. Dr Bronwyn Hanna is a researcher at the University of New South Wales. She has taught and researched in the areas of Australian architectural history, planning, theory, geography and art history. She is one of the founder of the Constructive Women Architecture and Design Archive at Stanton Library in North Sydney, which welcomes documentation of Australian women's design work.
