Platforms: Architecture and the Use of the Ground is Dogma's study of the platform—one of architecture's oldest and least examined forms—and of how it changes the way the ground itself can be inhabited.

About This Book

Platforms are usually read as instruments of power: the raised base that sets a temple, palace or monument apart. Dogma, the Brussels practice of Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara, propose a broader reading. By lifting, levelling and bounding a piece of ground, the platform also creates a common place—somewhere to gather, to orient oneself and to meet others.

Treating the platform as an archetype that recurs across many cultures and periods, the book brings together a subject that has received surprisingly little sustained attention in architectural history and theory.

Key Features

  • A focused study of the platform as an architectural archetype
  • Examples drawn from a wide range of cultures and historical periods

About the Author

Dogma is a Brussels-based architecture studio founded by Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara in 2002. Alongside built and unbuilt projects, the practice runs a sustained research program on the city, the ground and collective forms of living, published as a series of large-format studies. Aureli is also one of the most influential architectural theorists of his generation, the author of The Project of Autonomy and The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture.
