Great Houses of the Arts and Crafts Movement: One Hundred Masterworks 1860–1914 is a monumental survey of 100 houses that together tell the story of the Arts and Crafts movement in architecture across half a century.
About This Book
Melbourne architect David Cole begins with William Morris's Red House and follows the movement as it passed through its pioneers and reformers, the craftsmen building in the English countryside, the Scottish architects and the designers of the Garden City. The work of some 40 architects is represented, among them Philip Webb, Norman Shaw, C.F.A. Voysey, Edwin Lutyens and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Each house is treated individually, with Cole's design commentary, floor plans and photography of exteriors and interiors, much of it previously unpublished. The selection runs from substantial country estates such as Rodmarton Manor to small, finely judged buildings like Stowford Cottage, and the text is grounded in the ideas of John Ruskin and William Morris that gave the movement its moral and philosophical force.
