Never Too Small is a quarterly magazine from the Melbourne studio of the same name, devoted to small-footprint living. Issue nine is a different kind of issue from the Singapore-only eighth. It is a grab bag, built on the belief that what small-home dwellers need most is ideas: how to make a compact home work harder, what is possible within the space you have, and how to make it feel more like you.

About This Issue

The magazine says it has packed in more ideas than in any previous issue. Its cover stars are the London duo at Studiomama, who once turned an apartment the size of a carpark into a beautiful home. The editors give their tricks an “ideas-to-steal” score of 10/10.

Around them sit a handful of inventive designers, and the usual run of small homes from several countries. A practical section covers living small with a family, borrowing tricks from small-space hospitality, and making the most of even the tiniest entrance.

Key Features

  • Studiomama on the cover, with their small-space transformations
  • Fuyuki Shimazu, the Japanese designer who works in cardboard, makes tables from empty soft drink bottles, and turns airline comfort bags into lamps
  • Plutarco, a Madrid studio that favours spaces that surprise while staying livable
  • Guillermo Trapiello, also of Madrid, who rethinks everyday rituals in his own living laboratory
  • Four small-home case studies: a Japanese house full of pits, an experimental garage conversion in New Zealand, a Spanish apartment shaped by colour and light, and an Italian apartment reimagined with one 60cm-high wall
  • Practical guides to small-family living, hospitality-inspired home tricks, and entrance design

What You'll Discover

  • Four very different approaches to reworking a small plan, from pits to a single low wall
